Learn Angular the modern way, from your first component to a tested, secure, deployed application.
Angular has changed a lot in recent versions. Standalone components replaced most module boilerplate, signals bring simple and precise reactive state, the new control flow makes templates easier to read, new projects run without zone.js, and Signal Forms and Vitest-based testing arrived in the default toolchain. Whether you are new to Angular or returning from an older version, this book teaches the current approach from the first page — and takes you all the way to production.
You build one real application step by step, and each feature appears at the moment it solves a problem you actually have, so you learn how to design Angular applications, not just how to call APIs.
What's inside
- What Angular is good at, the CLI, the files a new project contains, and the modern defaults: standalone components, zoneless change detection, and file names without suffixes
- The TypeScript you need: types, interfaces, unions, generics, utility types, classes, and strict mode
- Components and templates: bindings, @if, @for, @switch, @let, styles, and view encapsulation
- Signals in depth: signal, computed, effect, linkedSignal, signal inputs, outputs, models, and queries
- Directives, pipes, services, dependency injection, and injection tokens
- Routing: parameters, route input binding, lazy loading, functional guards, resolvers, titles, and layouts
- HttpClient, interceptors, a local mock API, and RxJS from first principles: operators, search-as-you-type, combining streams, errors, and retries
- Async data with toSignal, resource, and httpResource, plus a signal-based store
- Authentication and role-based access with login, tokens, guards, and a structural directive
- Forms three ways: template-driven forms, typed reactive forms, and Signal Forms, with built-in, custom, cross-field, and async validators
- A complete leave request and approval workflow with dialogs, notifications, and careful form UX
- Testing with Vitest and TestBed: components, services, HTTP, the router, and forms, plus end-to-end and accessibility testing
- Security: XSS protection, sanitization, CSP, XSRF, open redirects, and safe token handling
- Performance: OnPush, zoneless, @defer, lazy routes, and bundle budgets
- Server-side rendering, hydration, and prerendering, with an honest look at when they help
- Environments, runtime configuration, Docker and nginx, static hosting, CI, error handling, monitoring, and upgrades with ng update
One running example, start to finish. You build the Brightwater HR Portal, the internal HR application of a fictional software company: an employee directory with search, department pages, a dashboard, leave balances, a leave request form that counts working days and checks holidays, an approval queue for managers and HR, role-based navigation, and a full test suite. It runs against a small, dependency-free mock API included in the book, and the sample data is small enough to check by hand — the same names, numbers, and dates appear in every chapter.
Current and honest. The book targets recent versions of Angular and explains where defaults changed for older projects. APIs still in developer preview or experimental are labeled as such, and the book contains no invented benchmarks or statistics. Every chapter includes step-by-step instructions, complete code, Tips, Notes, Warnings, exercises, and Key Takeaways, and the appendices give you a cheat sheet, templates and reference material with the complete mock API, a production checklist, and a glossary.
